What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Modern car keys contain unique chips that are unique to each vehicle, which is not the case with older keys. This stops thieves from taking the key and putting it in the car.

These keys are typically bought from a dealer or copied by a locksmith. The manufacturer's process varies however, it involves turning the ignition key to the "on" position, without activating the vehicle, and then removing the key after the time frame.

Transponder Codes

When a transponder gets interrogated it transmits an encoded signal that is accompanied by the four-digit code. This signal is known as the SQUAWK code and it is the basis for identifying aircraft on radar screens. It also serves to send an exact message to air traffic control in the event of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers to changing weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is unable speak on the radio. They are essential to ensure safe flying.

Every aircraft has a transponder that responds to radar queries by identifying a code. This enables ATC to identify the aircraft on a radar screen that is busy. Transponders can be configured to respond in a variety of ways when asked. Mode A transmits only the code, while mode C also provides altitude information. Mode S transponders offer more specific information including call signs and positions which are useful in airspace that is crowded.

A common sight is a small beige box beneath a pilot's seat in the majority of aircraft. This is the transponder and it is set to transmit an SQUAWK code when the aircraft is activated by air traffic control. The transponder can be set to the 'ON, and 'ALT' or SBY (standby position) positions.

Air traffic control can often tell a pilot to "squawk the ident". This is a directive for the pilots to press their transponder IDENT button. The ident button causes the aircraft blink on ATC radar screens which allows them to identify your aircraft on the screen.

There are 63 distinct codes that can be assigned to aircrafts but there are also certain reserved codes that prohibit the use of a specific code in an area that is prone to traffic or emergencies. The discrete code block configuration is based on statistical analysis to reduce the likelihood of two aircraft with the same SQUAWK code being in the same area.

A transponder key is equipped with an embedded chip which contains the ID code. If the security light on a car appears, it indicates that the ID code of the key does not match the one stored in the computer. The immobilizer on the car will be disabled, and the car won't start unless there is a new key. Pop-A-Lock recommends that customers buy a new transponder key or have them cut by an experienced locksmith.

PIN codes

A PIN code is a set of numbers (usually six or four digits) that can be used to gain access to an item or system. For instance, a smart phone comes with a PIN code that is set by the user when they first buy the device and must enter each time they want to use it. PIN codes are also commonly used to protect ATM or POS transactions,[1] secure access control (doors, computers, cars),[2] computer systems,[3] and internet transactions.

While a longer code may appear more secure but there are ways to guess or hack the PIN code as short as four digits. To provide greater security it is recommended that PINs are at least 6 digits in length and include both numbers and letters. PIN codes are also required by some OEMs for aftermarket key programmers as a security measure to prevent them from being used by non-authorized people to collect data from the modules.

VIN Numbers


VIN numbers can be used to identify vehicles and provide a wealth information about them. VIN numbers are unique to every vehicle on the planet with the exception of alien cars (or whatever). The 17 numbers of the VIN code are a mixture of letters and numbers which can be decoded in order to reveal vital information about your vehicle or truck.

Modern cars are digital libraries that hold a wealth of information about their history and specifications. The key to unlocking this information is the VIN number. This permits you to determine everything from if your vehicle was subject to recalls, to the many owners it has.

A VIN number is comprised of several sections, each with particular information. The first digit, for instance is the type of vehicle the car is, for example, an automobile for passengers, a pickup truck or SUV. The second number is the manufacturer. The third digit indicates the car's assembly division. The fourth through eighth digits represent the model type, the restraint system type and body type, along with the codes for transmission and engine. In North America, the 10th through 17th digits of the VIN code are referred to as the Vehicle Identification Section or VIS. The tenth and eleventh digits indicate the year of the vehicle's manufacture. The eleventh digit indicates which assembly plant manufactured the vehicle. Additionally, the tenth through seventeenth numbers could contain additional information, like options or features that are included in the vehicle.

The six digits that make up the VIN code are a sequential serial number that is unique to the car or truck. The last digit of the VIN code is also known as the check-digit. The other numbers have been converted into numbers. The first digit is given an 8 and each subsequent digit increases in value by one until the seventh digit reaches nine, which is then two.
